Permission vs Consequence
The Misdiagnosis That Controls Behavior
⚠️ CORE DISTORTION
People don’t actually fear consequences.
They fear:
losing permission before the consequence even happens
These are not the same.
🧠 THE DIFFERENCE
Consequence = What actually happens after you act
Permission = What you believe will be allowed before you act
But in practice, they get fused into one:
“I can’t say that”
(translates to)
“I assume the consequence will be bad”
🔍 WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING
The brain runs a prediction model:
- estimates social fallout
- simulates rejection
- imagines punishment
Then converts that simulation into:
a feeling of disallowed action
No one stops you.
You stop yourself.
⚡ RESULT
People behave as if:
- permission is externally controlled
- consequences are guaranteed
- risk is absolute
When in reality:
- permission is often assumed
- consequences vary wildly
- most predictions are exaggerated
🎯 IPT STRIKE
“You didn’t hit a wall.
You predicted one… and turned.”
🧱 WHY THIS MATTERS
This confusion:
- shrinks expression
- reinforces silence
- strengthens perceived control systems
Even when those systems aren’t actively enforcing anything.
